There are several APRS packages available to the storm chaser. Some of these packages include UI-VIEW (my favorite) and
Win APRS. Others are available, but these seem to be the most widely used among the storm chaser community.
APRS is designed for transmitting and receiving positions and various weather related information. You may use APRS to send text messages to other
Amateur Radio Operators (HAMS) or receive watches & warnings from the national weather service.
The two packages list here allows you to create custom maps, and with the right mapping software, you can make custom maps with ease. If you download radar or satellite images, you can create custom maps using these images. Upon creation of the map, you can then overlay your position on the map.
For a simple APRS setup a few items are needed. You will need a GPS, amateur radio with 2 meter capabilities, a TNC (terminal node controller) and of course your laptop. Kenwood makes APRS ready amateur radios (see Amateur Radios under the hardware section).
Depending on what capabilities you want with your APRS, depends on the hardware you will need to
acquire, however an 2 meter rig and TNC are required. If you want real-time tracking, a GPS is needed. If you are running a stand-alone APRS rig without a laptop, the Kenwood radios make life much simpler.
