Many of us use some sort of hardware/software combination when out in the field.  There are a few storm chasers who jump in their vehicles (a piece of hardware we all have), and make a run for it with a few maps.  There are also a few chasers who barely have room in their vehicles to sit because of all the equipment they tend to haul with them.  In my opinion (if you really want to know it) to much gear is distracting, but too little can make for a  bad situation. 

You should always have mean of communication.  If you are in the field for your own entertainment, that is your choice, but please do us all a favor, and at least have the equipment to make severe weather reports to your NWS office or local SYKWARN net.
