Mapping software comes in all shapes and sizes. Most of the more recent versions from Delorme and Microsoft provide an abundance of information not limited to street-level mapping.
Most mapping software today has the ability to interface with a GPS to allow real time tracking and even give you audible speaking directions!
Some mapping software will give you the ability to export your map view to a JPG or GIF file which can be used in various APRS software packages.
The main thing here is to find what you need to software to do, and purchase accordingly. I personally have 4 different mapping software packages becuase I did not get the right package to begin with, so choose wisely!!
